Current events have a way of being foretold in the book 1984.
If you have not read the book 1984, you really should. 1984 has a way of popping up in current events every year. I feel like the way our country is behaving really is comparable to the ideas in that book. Basically it discussed how the country would change the narrative to fit the needs of the government. It was done in order to control the population. For example if we like one country and we are aligned with them history lessons and documentation would be slanted to support them. If it changed so would the history documentation. It was also done for domestic matters. The way I see things happening is how we have looked at civilizations in the past.
Those older civilizations would grow to a point and then fail. It wasn’t too long ago that as a country we where becoming very tolerant of all people. The movements for gay, trans, people of color, etc. were really gaining traction in my opinion. I base this on the fact my son is able to work in a situation where he wears a full face of makeup and works with the public. This would never have happened when I was his age. Of course things were not perfect, but things were going in the right direction.
Now I feel like everyone is tearing down everyone else. An example is the creator Shane Dawson who has been vilianized recently. Prior to the country going insane he was viewed as a gentle creator who supported other creators and was beloved by his followers. He has been creating for over ten years. That means that he has been around and in the public eye through years of change and different social climates. If someone would take the time to watch his stuff through out the years you would see that as a creator he has grown with his audience. The material changed over the years and reflected his audience as well. He has been held accountable for what he has put out. He has been corrected and he learned from his mistakes. His material has changed and he doesn’t make the same mistakes again. The problem is he had skits approx. ten years ago were he had a character sha nay nay. Yes it was not a flattering piece of work looking back from our current view point. But what people don’t want to take into consideration is that there were many similar parodies like this being done at the time. People also are not realizing creators make what the audiences wants. He has sky rocketed with his material. So it’s not Shane who should be vilianized, it’s us. We asked for it. We ate it up. And made him a star. I also want to point out as we changed so did Shane. His material has grown and so has he. But what is happening are people from all points are tearing him down now. Why are we going back and looking for things to hurt someone with. I feel like it’s just a witch hunt. One thing I’m really disappointed with at this point is the way the Will Smith family has attacked him. They are mad at him for pointing out that he brought out a picture of Willow Smith and pointed out the sexualized pictures of a young girl. Did he do it wrong, yes he did. But why is no one discussing that the Smith family had pictures of Willow done that where obviously made to look sexy. The pictures are disgusting in my opinion and I would never have had pictures of my daughter made like this at 18, much less at 11. The family is mad that he pointed this out. Saying he was wrong for seeing it in that light. In my opinion there are no other motivations for those pictures then to be sexy. So who is the audience that they where for? Who do the Smith family think are going to look at them. If anything I feel like the Smith family should thank him for making them aware it wasn’t seen by others outside of their family but anything then them making her appealing to adult men. Instead Shane is now enemy number one. Behind him are many creators that are being vilianized by the public for material they put out years ago. I think this is just convenient for the country, when just yesterday it was the injustice of the police against everyone. So this is again where the ideas of the book 1984 come in. It’s the idea that when it’s not convenient for the government, the narrative is changed.
We Lost Focus
We are redirected and therefore controlled. It’s like yesterday we where mad at the death of a citizen at the hands of a police officer. Things where changing, talk of revamping the way the police forces are governed was on the verge of real change. But today we care about what creators did ten years ago and people are just following along threatening violence against them. These people have already changed. But it is a whole lot more convenient for the public to hang them out to dry then to continue to demand change in our justice system. I feel really disappointed in this whole situation. I hope at some point we can wake up as a country and remember what is really important. We need to focus on today. We need to change what is happening today. There is no benefit to any of us to go back in time. At this point we have real problems in our country. In order to make changes we must focus on today.
Please comment with your thoughts, I really would like to know how you all feel about what is going on currently.
Reading 1984, George Orwell’s claustrophobic fable of totalitarianism, is still a shock. First comes the start of recognition: we recognise what he describes. Doublethink (holding two contradictory thoughts at the same time), Newspeak, the Thought Police, the Ministry of Love that deals in pain, despair and annihilates any dissident, the Ministry of Peace that wages war, the novel-writing machines that pump out pornography to buy off the masses: Orwell opened our eyes to how regimes worked.
Big Brother. 2+2=5. The memory hole. “Truth isn’t truth.” Sound familiar? They’re from George Orwell’s dark masterpiece, “1984.” OK, not all of those phrases. That last one, “Truth isn’t truth,” that’s from the President Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani. So it’s real, and recent. That shows you the timelessness and predictive power of Orwell’s “1984.”
